Welcome to the One Day Film School, an online Skills activity for The Duke of Edinburgh's Award - Bronze and Silver. 

Learn about Film History, Fight Choreography, Camera, Editing… then take the 10 Shot Challenge and put your new filmmaking skills to the test.

FILM HISTORY

Who were the pioneers of film? Who were the early innovators of editing? When was the golden era of musicals? What are independent films, and why do people make them? How have special effects changed over the years?

FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHY

Learn how to safely create realistic fight scenes on camera, make a punch sound using everyday items, and create fake blood with a recipe from professional make-up artists.

CAMERA 

Learn how to use your device’s camera like a pro, plus tips and tricks to avoid common mistakes. You’ll also learn the three main types of camera angle, how to use them - then shoot and edit a practice 3 Shot Film.

10 SHOT CHALLENGE

Now you’ve covered the essentials, it’s time for you to take the 10 Shot Challenge and put your new filmmaking skills to the test. 

Assemble your crew - who’s doing what in front of and behind the camera? 

Next, pick one of the 5 classic storylines - and come up with a simple story that can be told in 10 shots. 

Fill out the 10 Shot Planner in your Student Pack. Collect (or make) props and costumes. Rehearse your film. Shoot then edit your film. Test screen it for family and friends. Then pop the popcorn, roll out the carpet and get ready for the World Premiere. 

10 SHOT FILM AWARDS

Young Film Academy's annual 10 Shot Film Awards recognise filmmaking excellence, and in 2024, a new category will be launched: Best 10 Shot Film - The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. 

Young Film Academy experts will shortlist the best films submitted by Duke of Edinburgh participants. These will be showcased on the One Day Film School website, and winners announced in late-2024. 

The judging panel is headed by Robin Kinsey, Vice President Marketing, Walt Disney Studios EMEA & UK - Marvel, Lucasfilm & 20th Century Studios.
